Mrs. Vittorio, it seemed, was a determined woman. Mere moments later, Catherine watched almost dazedly as Max dismissed Delacourt’s carriage, then assisted her into another almost as fine, but his words were brusque, his actions abrupt. The equipage, she guessed, belonged to the great signora, Max’s grandmother, who Catherine already suspected was not the shut-in Mrs. Vittorio wished her to believe. In fact, as she gazed at the woman’s flashing eyes and flying hands, Catherine began to suffer the unsettling sensation of being drawn inexorably toward a tightly woven spider’s web.
